Diamond mines
During the early 1900s, an entrepreneur claimed to have found diamonds in the area. The locals found him beaten up the next day. Later, the state purchased the property for $750,000. The diamond field was opened to the public in 1949.
The Pike County diamond pipe accumulated from molten rock deep in the earth’s mantle. It was formed during a volcanic eruption over 100 million years ago. When it cooled, the diamonds crystallized. The resulting diamonds were embedded in igneous host rocks.
The Pike County diamond pipe grew in size, accumulating in stages. The surface section was mined for about thirty years. The area was examined intermittently for another thirty years.
Lakes and rivers
