Crossgates Mall wasn’t always a bustling shopping destination. Its inception can be traced back to the Albany Pine Bush, a globally significant inland pine barren which emerged thousands of years ago in the wake of Lake Albany’s drainage.
This ecological gem acted as the hunting territory and a source of firewood for the Mohawk nation of the Haudenosaunee and the Mahican tribes long before the footprints of European settlers marked the region in the early 17th century.
Fast forward to the 20th century, Crossgates Mall emerged as a symbol of modernity and commercial prosperity. On March 4, 1984, the mall built by Pyramid opened its doors to the public. Its initial 975,000 square feet footprint hosted four anchor stores: Filene’s, JCPenney, Jordan Marsh, and Caldor.
The mall was launched with 80 out of the projected 170 smaller vendor spaces occupied, mirroring the nationwide surge in the inauguration of shopping centers.

Pyramid Management Group, the mall’s builders, attempted to double the mall’s footprint to an enormous 3.6 million square feet to accommodate a new recreation facility.
They also sought to demolish a nearby residential neighborhood to make way for an 8-story hotel. However, the proposal sparked widespread citizen protests, leading to its rejection by the Guilderland Town Board.
More recently, the mall faced another controversy with plans for a new Costco store and a large residential apartment building near its premises. The proposal sparked environmental concerns due to its proximity to the Albany Pine Bush Preserve and criticism from nearby residents.
Despite these challenges and a court battle that initially halted the project, a higher court eventually reversed the decision, allowing the project to proceed.
A Vibrant Hub Today
Crossgates Mall is a monument to Albany’s commercial and social spirit today. It’s the largest indoor shopping center in the Capital District and the third-largest in New York State. The mall houses retailers, including Primark (coming July 20, 2023), Macy’s, JCPenney, Burlington, Best Buy, Forever 21, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
But Crossgates Mall isn’t just about shopping. It has become a vibrant hub for community events. The mall fosters community spirit and engagement, from charity walks to art exhibitions and store openings.
