They also sought to demolish a nearby residential neighborhood to make way for an 8-story hotel. However, the proposal sparked widespread citizen protests, leading to its rejection by the Guilderland Town Board.

More recently, the mall faced another controversy with plans for a new Costco store and a large residential apartment building near its premises. The proposal sparked environmental concerns due to its proximity to the Albany Pine Bush Preserve and criticism from nearby residents.

Despite these challenges and a court battle that initially halted the project, a higher court eventually reversed the decision, allowing the project to proceed.

Crossgates Mall is a monument to Albany’s commercial and social spirit today. It’s the largest indoor shopping center in the Capital District and the third-largest in New York State. The mall houses retailers, including Primark (coming July 20, 2023), Macy’s, JCPenney, Burlington, Best Buy, Forever 21, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

But Crossgates Mall isn’t just about shopping. It has become a vibrant hub for community events. The mall fosters community spirit and engagement, from charity walks to art exhibitions and store openings.
