Berkeley Mall: The Shopping Center that Grew with Goldsboro, NC

There’s a charm about the Berkeley Mall in Goldsboro, North Carolina. It’s more than just a shopping center – a piece of shared history, a testament to resilience, and a symbol of community spirit.

Berkeley Mall is a crucial player in the regional retail landscape, being the only enclosed regional mall in a 40-mile radius and serving a primary trade area that reaches seven counties. The mall and the adjacent Berkeley Corner provide over 500,000 square feet of shopping space.

The retail corridor’s focal point includes significant stores such as Belk, JCPenney, Dick’s Sporting Goods, PetSmart, and rue21. In addition, the mall’s strategic location and broad retail offerings make it a bustling hub of activity in Goldsboro.

The Foundation and Early Days

In 1975, the grand opening of the Berkeley Mall signaled a new era for Goldsboro. One of its original anchors was Weil’s, a name that would later change to Brody’s, and then Proffitt’s in 1998. In 2006, the anchor store found its current identity as Belk.

The mall has seen more than just a change in store names, though. It’s seen generations of Goldsboro families grow, laugh, shop, and create memories.

Among the many stores that have called Berkeley Mall home over the years, Joann Fabrics stands out for its long-standing presence since 2013.

It has been a haven for creative souls, offering many fabrics and crafts that have sparked countless DIY projects and inspired many local artisans.

Trials and Tribulations

But like any enduring institution, Berkeley Mall has faced its share of trials. The most notable was in August 2011, when Hurricane Irene swept through eastern North Carolina.

As a result, the mall suffered roof damage near the Belk store. Despite the challenges, the mall held firm, a testament to the resilience of the Goldsboro community.

Another significant moment in our mall’s history came in October 2018, when Sears announced it would be closing its doors at the mall. This came as part of a nationwide plan to close 142 stores.

The closure left a void in the mall, and hearts as people bid farewell to a store that had been part of their lives for so long.

Revitalization and Renewal

Yet, the spirit of Berkeley Mall could not be dampened. In the Spring of 2023, a new chapter began announcing the Burlington store opening in the former Sears building. The news brought the community a new wave of excitement, promising jobs, and a fresh shopping experience.

The new Burlington store will occupy 74,000 square feet of space, offering a wide range of products for men, women, children, and pets. It will be opened in Fall 2023.

This rejuvenation promises to breathe new life into the mall, ensuring it continues to serve our community for years to come.

Community and Events

Berkeley Mall isn’t just about shopping, though. It’s also a hub for community events and activities. One such event was held on April 8, 2023, when the mall welcomed the Easter Bunny and Magician Dana Hill for fun and entertainment.

Events like these highlight the mall’s role in creating joyful memories and bringing our community closer together.

Conclusion

Berkeley Mall isn’t just a shopping center – it’s a piece of Goldsboro’s history and a community cornerstone. From its opening in 1975 to the exciting announcement of Burlington’s opening in 2023, the mall has symbolized the community’s resilience and growth.

Looking ahead, there’s a lot to be excited about. As we welcome new stores and bid farewell to old ones, one thing remains constant:

Berkeley Mall will continue to be where people come together, create memories, and celebrate community. Here’s to many more years of shopping, laughter, and community spirit at the Berkeley Mall.

GameStop has been in Berkeley mall longer than Jo-Ann fabrics. I was stationed there from 2005-2009 and I would shops there.

The Berkely Mall needs more than just one new store. How about a food court? I would rather travel to Raleigh or Myrtle Beach to shop than waste my time there.

Thanks for your insight! More store variety and a food court could make the mall more appealing.
