A Stroll Down Memory Lane
In the heart of Gastonia, North Carolina, lies a place that has stood as a hub of community activity and a beacon of retail evolution for more than four decades. Enter Eastridge Mall – a place that has always been more than just a shopping center.
Whether you’re a local who has visited countless times, or someone who’s heard stories about it, Eastridge Mall is sure to evoke a sense of nostalgia.
Emerging in 1976 on the grounds of what once was the Rhyne Dairy Farm, Eastridge Mall was brought to life by the efforts of Carlson Properties. The mall has undergone several transformations since its inception. A significant renovation took place in 1996, introducing several additions to the mall’s layout and offerings.
Anchors Away: The Pillars of Eastridge
Over the years, Eastridge Mall has been home to several anchor stores. These larger department stores have been pillars around the smaller shops and services. Belk, one of the original anchor tenants, has held its ground through the years, undergoing extensive interior renovations to keep up with the times.
Dillard’s also made its presence felt at Eastridge, taking over from Ivey’s department store in 1990 and then moving to a new, more prominent location in 1997. Stepping into the space left empty by Dillard’s in 1998, Sears became the fourth key tenant at the mall. However, it had to shut down in 2014 in a twist of events.
JCPenney was another original anchor tenant, though it relocated within the mall in 1997 before eventually closing in 2017. Curt’s Premium Outlet now occupies its space.

Eastridge mall has nothing to offer now. Except shoe stores, and hit or miss food spots. There is no variety. All of the big name stores are gone.
Thanks for your comment. It’s indeed a sad state of affairs. Here’s hoping that the mall can regain its vibrancy and variety in the future.
Eastridge mall is now a blight on the city. I personally have known 2 people that were killed in the parking lot. The armed robbery of bath and body works and the cheap stores that are scattered around the empty spaces. I refuse to go there because of the criminal activity. The DMV office is now the anchor of the mall. That’s just sad.
Thank you for sharing your concerns. It’s disheartening to hear about such incidents, and I hope the situation improves for the betterment of the community.
Eastridge is essentially dead. Most stores are closed. Crime is high. It needs to be razed.
