Park City Center Mall: Where Lancaster, PA’s Memories Are Made

The Genesis and Evolution of Park City Center Mall

In September 1971, the Park City Center Mall welcomed its first visitors, heralding a new era in the retail scene of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Developed by the Park City Shopping Center Corporation, this mall was designed to be more than just a shopping destination; it was envisioned as a central hub for commerce and social interaction.

Over 1,443,000 square feet, Park City Center emerged as the largest enclosed shopping center in Lancaster County, offering a diverse range of over 150 stores and services.

The architectural design of Park City Center is unique and thoughtfully planned. Its layout, resembling a snowflake, features stores extending along eight corridors from a central point. This design not only facilitates easy navigation but also adds an aesthetic appeal.

The centerpiece of this architectural marvel is the large white tent roof that encloses the octagonal Center Court, creating a distinctive and recognizable landmark.

2008, the mall underwent a comprehensive 18-month renovation, enhancing its structure and design. These updates ensured that Park City Center remained at the forefront of modern retail spaces.

Initially known as the “Mall of Four Seasons,” Park City Center’s corridors were named after the seasons, each leading to a different anchor store.

This encompassed JCPenney located in the Winter section, Sears in the Spring, Gimbel’s (which later transitioned to Pomeroy’s and subsequently to Boscov’s) in the Summer, and Watt & Shand (eventually becoming Bon-Ton) in the Autumn.

The unique thing about this mall was the farmer’s market on the lower level, the skating rink, and the arcade. There was also a movie theater. You could view the skaters from the first floor of the mall through a plexiglass-type floor. There was also a carousel located in the center of the mall right under the large circus-like tent structure that is the vocal point of the design. The floors were also carpeted with benches made of Naugahyde. I think they were orange and light blue: the colors of the ’70s. There was a police “station” located at the end of one of the lesser snowflake spokes. You could view them from the inside of the mall or the driveway that was a drop-off point at that entrance to that “spoke” doorway. CBS 21 also had its station housed in the basement behind the escalators. I appreciate your endeavor.
