The Past, Present, and Future of Western Hills Mall in Fairfield, AL

Historical Background

Nestled in Fairfield, Alabama, Western Hills Mall has been more than just a shopping center; it’s been a part of the community’s fabric since its establishment in 1969.

Western Hills Mall has a rich history of adaptation and survival. The mall initially featured JCPenney and the famous local department store chain Loveman’s, among other tenants. Over time, the mall underwent significant changes, including the transformation of its anchor stores.

Loveman’s changed hands several times, eventually becoming Parisian in 1999 before closing in 2005. That same year, JCPenney also closed its doors at the mall. However, Western Hills Mall managed to find new life.

The vacant JCPenney store was demolished, and Walmart decided to move from its former location next door to the mall, opening a Walmart Supercenter in 2006. Though not directly attached to the mall, the new Wal-Mart drew shoppers to the area.

2007 Burlington Coat Factory entered the mall, taking over the Parisian space. These changes, renovations, and demographic shifts have allowed Western Hills Mall to continue serving its community despite losing its original anchors.

However, at the beginning of 2016, the Walmart Supercenter ceased operations, followed by the closure of Burlington Coat Factory in February 2017.

These departures left Western Hills Mall without any anchor stores. The once-vibrant mall began to lose its luster, reflecting a broader shift in retail trends that affected many traditional shopping centers nationwide.

Recent Renovations

The turning point for Western Hills Mall came when it was acquired by Peleg Group, a Florida-based real estate investment and managing company.

Recognizing the mall’s potential, they embarked on a massive renovation project. A newly paved parking lot, LED lights, and a new roof were just some improvements made, with the total cost nearing $4 million.

The investment in Western Hills Mall is seen as a beacon of hope for both the mall and the city of Fairfield. The belief is that a remodeled mall could lead to a substantial economic boost for the area. The renovations go beyond mere aesthetics; they are about breathing new life into a location cherished by the community.

Economic Impact and Business Prospects

Western Hills Mall‘s strategic location, situated between several regional attractions in metropolitan Birmingham, including Alabama Adventure Park and Legion Field, adds to its appeal. Anchored by a full-service WalMart SuperCenter and Burlington Coat Factory, it was the only enclosed climate-controlled shopping center serving the western side of metropolitan Birmingham.

The mall’s management has been actively working to attract new tenants, trying to breathe new life into the space. Once occupied by Walmart, the neighboring area holds potential for further development.

There have been suggestions for transforming the area into a mixed-use development, combining retail space with storage units. These efforts are part of a deliberate push to breathe new life into the mall and restore it to its former glory.

Safety Concerns and Challenges

Western Hills Mall is facing problems with security issues. A tragic incident unfolded at the mall on February 16, 2018, when a shootout occurred. The mall’s manager, Anthony Alberigi, lost his life in the exchange of gunfire.

The shooting of a 16-year-old in June 2023 is the latest in a series of unfortunate incidents at the mall over the years. For lifelong residents of Fairfield, it’s painful to see the mall associated with such adverse events.

Community members have expressed a desire for more robust security measures. They long for the days when they could visit the mall without fear, enjoying a safe and pleasant shopping experience.

The mall’s management has been responsive, with Fairfield police officers patrolling the area. However, rebuilding trust will take time and concerted effort from all stakeholders.

What once was a busy area , now just a lot of empty stores. Usual reason is the folks who have to destroy everything. Then holler because the area is run down. This area has lost it’s self esteem . The pride it had for working together to improve , show off what it has accomplished . Instead of throwing trash in the trash can, they’d rather just throw it on the ground. Sadly the destroyers have taken over this whole area. Sadly, what once was a nice clean area is a trash filled huge parking lot.
