Naples Zoo: Experience the Thrill of Wildlife in Naples, FL

The Evolution of Naples Zoo

The Naples Zoo, a cherished landmark in Naples, Florida, has a rich history that is as captivating as the diverse array of wildlife it houses. The story of the zoo is a tale of transformation, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to wildlife conservation.

In 1919, the seeds of what would become the Naples Zoo were sown by botanist Dr. Henry Nehrling, who purchased the land to protect his plant collection from the freeze of central Florida.

However, after he died in 1929, the garden fell into neglect until 1954, when Julius Fleischmann, Jr., a philanthropist and former mayor of Cincinnati, stepped in. Fleischmann rejuvenated the gardens, infusing them with a new lease of life and rechristening them as the “Caribbean Gardens.”

The transformation of the gardens into a zoo began in 1969 when Larry and Jane Tetzlaff, known as Jungle Larry and Safari Jane, introduced exotic animals to the gardens.

The Tetzlaffs were passionate about wildlife and committed to educating the public about the importance of wildlife conservation. Their dedication to the zoo remained steadfast even after Larry died in 1984, with the Tetzlaff family continuing to develop the zoo and its programs.

In 2001, the Naples Zoo received accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). This milestone underscored its commitment to the highest animal care, conservation, and education standards.

The zoo’s evolution continued in 2005 when it transitioned to a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, further solidifying its mission to inspire people of all ages to respect, value, and help conserve wildlife and our natural world.
