Unveiling the Secrets of Eastridge Mall in San Jose, CA

The Inception of Eastridge Mall

Eastridge Mall, a prominent fixture in the Evergreen district of East San Jose, California, opened its doors to the public on May 17, 1971. The opening of Eastridge marked a significant milestone, as it wasn’t merely another shopping center—it was the largest indoor shopping mall in the Western United States at the time of its launch.”

This architectural marvel was the brainchild of Bayshore Properties (Taubman Centers) and Homart Development Company, two entities that envisioned a vibrant community hub that would cater to the diverse needs of the local population.

The mall’s original anchors were a carefully curated mix of popular stores of the time—JCPenney, Sears, Macy’s, Joseph Magnin Co., and Liberty House. These stores offered a wide array of products, making Eastridge Mall a one-stop shopping destination for the residents of San Jose and beyond.

The Transformative Journey of Eastridge Mall

Eastridge Mall has never been one to rest on its laurels. Over the years, it has undergone several redesigns and renovations to keep pace with its patrons’ evolving tastes and preferences.

The most recent renovation, which took place in 2017, breathed new life into the mall. The renovation was more than just a superficial facelift—it was designed to elevate the overall shopping experience for patrons.

One of the highlights of this renovation was the introduction of the Eastridge Murals. These murals are the world’s largest ones in a shopping center. They added a unique artistic touch to the mall.

The murals, a collective masterpiece by celebrated artists Aaron de la Cruz, CYRCLE, Brendan Monroe, and Lila Gemellos, span an impressive 20,000 square feet of the mall’s exterior, turning it into a lively artistic display that mirrors the community’s cultural diversity.

The anchor stores have also seen changes over the years, reflecting the evolving retail landscape. While some stores have stood the test of time, others have made way for new entrants, ensuring that Eastridge Mall continues to offer a diverse and contemporary shopping experience.

In 1993, a significant addition was made to the mall – the Spillman Engineering 3 Abroad carousel. This carousel, made around 1920 by the Allan Herschell Company, was meticulously restored and placed in the mall, adding a touch of nostalgia and charm.

The carousel carries a historical weight, as it has been recognized on the National Register of Historic Places since 2000, making it an essential stop for visitors to the mall.

With its beautifully crafted horses and traditional organ music, the carousel transports visitors back in time, offering a delightful break from shopping.

Overcoming Challenges: Incidents and Responses

Eastridge Mall has had its share of challenges and incidents, like any other public place. In February 2012, a stabbing incident occurred in the mall, leading to JCPenney and Macy’s temporary closure.

The mall management and local law enforcement agencies responded swiftly to ensure the safety of the visitors and staff. Later that same year, an unidentified package was hurled into an AMC theater at Eastridge during a film screening, prompting an immediate evacuation. This incident, too, was handled efficiently, with minimal disruption to the mall’s operations.

In July 2012, a fire broke out near the mall. However, thanks to the prompt response of the local fire department, it was extinguished before it could reach any buildings. These incidents have highlighted the mall’s commitment to safety and ability to respond effectively to emergencies.

Recent Developments and Future Plans: A Glimpse into the Future

In January 2016, Pacific Retail Capital Partners and Silverpeak Real Estate Partners acquired the mall. This change in ownership marked the beginning of a new era for Eastridge Mall. However, the mall faced a significant setback when Barnes & Noble, a famous bookstore, closed its store in 2018, followed by Sears in 2020.

Despite these challenges, Eastridge Mall continues to evolve and adapt. In October 2022, the mall had to deal with a loan default issue, but it managed to land new investors to revamp its ownership structure.

In September 2022, a Vietnamese indoor market was introduced to fill the space left by the shuttered Sears, adding a new dimension to the shopping experience at the mall. In June 2023, a grass fire broke out near the mall but was quickly contained.
