Unveiling the Early Years
Tucked away in Salamanca, New York, lies a landmark steeped in history and mystical – the Wildwood Sanitarium. This seemingly ordinary building was allegedly constructed at the dawn of the 20th century. Its walls, standing the test of time, hold stories of a bygone era.
However, during renovations, owner Laurie Wagatha uncovered remnants of the past – square and rectangular nails from the 1800s and indications of gas lighting, painting a vivid picture of the building’s long-standing history.
In 1906, the sanitarium began its healthcare journey, opening its doors as an osteopathic institution, a progressive concept at the time. Dr. John Henderson and Dr. Carroll W. Perry, the visionaries behind this initiative, were pioneers in their field, establishing the first and only osteopathic institution in New York.
A Beacon of Holistic Healing
Adhering to the mantra “health without medicine,” the Wildwood Sanitarium aimed to cultivate an atmosphere of healing and tranquility. With his unwavering dedication, Dr. Henderson made every effort to make conditions inside the sanitarium as pleasant as possible, setting a high standard for patient care of that era.
In 1923, the sanitarium transformed. Responding to the community’s needs, it became a tuberculosis clinic. Despite this change, the commitment to a holistic approach to health and wellness remained steadfast.
The clinic incorporated innovative therapies of the time, such as UV light treatments, electric battery baths, and bone stretching, illustrating its continuing dedication to healing and wellness.
Tales that Chill and Thrill
The Wildwood Sanitarium’s long history extends beyond the realm of healthcare, branching into the mystical world of the supernatural. Over the years, it has earned a reputation as a hotspot for paranormal activity, with numerous reports of strange occurrences and eerie experiences.
These tales have woven themselves into the fabric of local lore, transforming the sanitarium into a magnet for thrill-seekers and paranormal enthusiasts.
The Sanitarium Today
Since being purchased in 2017 by Laurie Wagatha, the Wildwood Sanitarium has breathed new life as a unique and authentic reminder of a bygone era, now serving as a hub for paranormal enthusiasts.
Laurie and her daughter, Brooke, host groups for overnight paranormal investigations, offering tours and other events throughout the year. These investigations are not for the faint of heart, testing even the most seasoned ghost hunters with the paranormal activity captured at the location.
Wildwood Sanitarium boasts over 3,600 square feet of space, providing room for ten full-time patients. This space includes bedrooms, closets, kitchens, dining rooms, attic space, a large “bath house” in the basement, and additional rooms. It’s a sprawling, haunted playground waiting for you to explore and discover its many secrets.
The sanitarium is also a venue for birthdays and other special events. The location is heated and supplied with all the comforts of home to make your spirit investigation or event enjoyable.
For those needing a caffeine boost during their late-night investigations, freshly brewed coffee and a range of other refreshments like Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, and bottled waterare available.
Ghost Hunts at Wildwood Sanitarium are unique, structured, small ghost-hunting events for the paranormal enthusiast. These events are limited to a select number of guests, providing you with more time with equipment, team members, and the haunted location to explore, discover, and question.
The events usually start at 8:30 pm and finish at 4:00 am, providing ample time to conduct your own private vigils and explore the location at your leisure.
Since opening its doors to paranormal investigators, visitors have reported several haunting claims at Wildwood Sanitarium, including shadow figures and disembodied voices in a “Tommy’s” room. In addition, investigation in “Linda’s” room often manipulates investigation equipment.
On the second floor of the building, people have complained of feeling claustrophobic or of being watched. EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena) have been captured on the premises, and light anomalies are standard.
