About Ice Castles

In a winter wonderland of icy sculptures, frozen thrones, ice tunnels, slides, and more, Utah’s most unique attraction opens its doors for the season. Located at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Midway, Ice Castles is an ice-themed interactive experience with archways, mazes, slides, tunnels, and more crafted from over 25 million pounds of ice.

It takes thousands of man-hours to build an ice castle like this! Founded by Utah resident Brent Christensen, this family-friendly attraction has five locations across North America.

You can drive to Midway and enjoy the chilly scenery as you visit this winter wonderland. However, if you prefer to stay in a quality hotel, there are many options in the Midway area. Popular options include the Homestead Resort and Zermatt Utah Resort & Spa. Both offer non-smoking rooms and are within a short driving distance of the castles.

This park was a host site for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games at Soldier Hollow, a Nordic skiing venue open year-round. In addition, the center offers cross-country ski trails, tubing, biathlon, and in-line skating facilities.

The park also offers 122 camping/picnicking areas, modern restrooms, hot showers, and utility hookups. There is also a group-use pavilion and four overnight group areas.

The former site of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, Soldier Hollow Nordic Center is a world-class biathlon and cross-country skiing venue. It also offers snowshoeing, tubing, golf, and other outdoor activities.

The ski area includes a 31-kilometer trail network for all experience levels, on-site rentals and lessons, and Utah’s longest tow-rope-supported tubing hill. In addition, there’s a lodge, snowshoeing trails and rentals, and mountain biking competition events like the Intermountain Cup Series.

The Nordic center also serves as a training and competition facility for local youth skiers and biathletes. It has programs for children ages 6 to 19 designed to teach them how to ski and develop their skills, endurance, and technique.

The train departs Heber City for a scenic tour that follows the shores of Deer Creek Reservoir to Vivian Park, where children can play on the playground and adults can enjoy views of Provo Canyon and Mount Timpanogos. Afterward, climb aboard again for a trip back to Heber Depot.

Homestead Crater Mineral Dome

The Homestead Crater is a geothermal hot spring hidden inside a 55-foot-high beehive-shaped limestone dome. It’s over 10,000 years in the making and was formed when melting snow on the Wasatch Mountains seeped deep within the earth.
