Ownership, Management, and History

The Pyramid Companies, who also own and manage the Palisades Center in West Nyack, NY, is responsible for owning and operating the Poughkeepsie Galleria.

The mall’s story began in the early 1980s when a proposal for a two-story indoor mall was submitted amid conflict and protests. Nevertheless, the mall officially opened on August 1, 1987, as the Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall.

The mall initially featured five anchor stores, including G. Fox & Co., Filene’s, Lechmere, Jordan Marsh, and JCPenney. Over the years, these anchor stores have seen multiple changes over the years, with new tenants such as Steinbach, Sears, and Montgomery Ward moving in.

In 2004, DSW and Dick’s Sporting Goods shifted to new locations within the mall, and the former Filene’s and Lechmere spaces were converted to house Best Buy and Target.

Challenges and Changes

In January 2005, the mall implemented the Pyramid Companies’ “MB-18” teenage curfew policy following a large fight involving young teenagers. Local police intervened, resulting in several arrests. In 2006, Filene’s was converted to Macy’s.

The early 2020s saw multiple traditional chain anchors, like Sears and JCPenney, updating their brick-and-mortar fleets in response to disruption from digital retailers.

By October 2022, after reopening from the COVID-19 shutdown, the Galleria announced the addition of 110 Grill, The Village Pancake Factory, and Windsor. Unfortunately, the mall had to adapt during the pandemic, with an executive order in March 2020 closing the interior portion of the mall.

Only essential businesses with external entrances, like Target, remained operational. The mall’s interior reopened on July 10, 2020, with reduced hours as part of Governor Cuomo’s Phase 4 economic reopening plan.
