Located just south of Laughlin, the Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area is only a short drive away. A good place to stay is at the park’s campground, which includes 24 units, full utility hookups, showers, and a barbeque grill.
There’s a lot to see in the park, however, and it’s not just the river itself. Check out the 1.2-mile Big Sandy Loop and the 0.9-mile Conservation Trail, two of the more popular hikes. Also worth a look is the two-mile stretch of sandy shoreline along the river.
Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park & Trails
The Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park & Trails is a new park for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s located in Laughlin, Nevada, and is a part of the larger Lake Mead National Recreation Area. This park includes nine miles of trails perfect for bicycling, hiking, horseback riding, and other activities. There are several things to do at the park, including a geology hike, a river walk, and a trail to the dam.
This project has received significant AGO recognition, including recognition as a promising national undertaking. It has also been recognized as a sign of local conservation success. The Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park & Trails has been named a national site worth visiting for two consecutive years.
The park is located on the Colorado River’s west side, on the Mojave Desert’s south edge. It features a building with bathrooms and a large observation deck. Some of the attractions at the park include picnic areas, an amphitheater, and a river walk.
The Colorado River is a popular water sport, with fishing, boating, and jet skiing among the most popular activities. Visitors can also enjoy the scenic trails of the Colorado River Heritage Greenway Tail. These trails are easy to access and ideal for beginner hikers.
The park offers a range of activities, with nine miles of new trails. In addition to the park’s attractions, there are also hotels, motels, and other lodging options.
Bullhead City Rotary Park
A 300-acre parcel of land along the Colorado River is home to Bullhead City’s Rotary Park. The park offers a variety of recreational opportunities. It features a boat launch ramp, a skate park, beaches, and walking trails. There are also several barbecue areas and ramadas.
Bullhead City’s Parks and Recreation Department offers weekly activities. They are open to the public and encourage residents to explore the park.
In addition to offering daily activities, the department hosts some annual events. One is the American Youth Soccer Organization’s (AYSO) Region 397 tournament, which takes place in February. Another is the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions, a premier high school girls’ fastpitch tournament.
Don Laughlin’s Classic Car Museum
If you’re a car enthusiast, you may want to visit Don Laughlin’s Classic Car Museum in Laughlin, Nevada. This museum has over 70 cars and autos, including antique cars, vintage horseless carriages, and even limousines owned by historical figures.
Don Laughlin’s Classic Car Collection is a curated collection of automobiles assembled from private collections. It features rare and historic automobiles displayed in two separate exhibit halls on the third floor of the Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino South Tower.
The main exhibit hall is packed with a rotating collection of fully restored and concept cars. Also displayed are vintage motorcycles, antique roulette wheels, and pins from military members.
There’s also a 40-foot pink hot tub convertible limo from the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Other attractions include a General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard, a Coffin Dragster from the Munsters, and Herbie the Love Bug.
Dead Mountains Wilderness Area
The Dead Mountains Wilderness Area is located in the Mohave Desert, near the Colorado River and the California-Nevada border. The area is 47,157 acres in size. This wilderness has been designated as an essential habitat for endangered desert tortoises.
This area is known for its scenic beauty. It is also home to numerous wildlife, including coyotes, rattlesnakes, prairie falcons, red-tailed hawks, bighorn sheep, and golden eagles.
The eastern part of the wilderness is considered vital habitat for the threatened desert tortoise. In September 2019, the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe petitioned the US Congress to designate this area as a national monument.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages the area. Vehicles are not allowed in the wilderness. Instead, visitors must use leave no trace techniques.
The northern half of the wilderness contains the Dead Mountains. These mountains are composed of dark volcanic material. The side of the ridges is steep. They run north to south and drop to Piute Valley in the west.
